Smokin'!

You'd think I'd be the first one to rush out and see Smoke Signals, billed as the first all-Native American film. Well, I didn't get around to it until this weekend, but I'm glad I went.

It's not an outstanding film, not particularly creative or unique, aside from the Native American aspect, but it's likable enough in a low-key kind of way. The film's key to success is that it doesn't aim too high, so it hits its mark. It's about two young Coeur D'Alene Indians, Victor and Thomas, linked from an early age by a tragic accident that killed Thomas's parents and eventually drove Victor's father away. Years later, the young men learn that Victor's father has died, and they head down to Arizona to collect his ashes.

This echoes closely the plot of another Native American film, Powwow Highway, which I think is a better film all around. The comparison is even more apt given that Gary Farmer, one of the buddies in Powwow Highway, plays Victor's father here.

My one big complaint with the film is its trite, unconvincing ending ---angry, bitter young man finds peace in a Moment of Clarity --- that we've seen too many times (at least this time there was no Robin Williams hopping around shouting, "It's not your fault! It's not your fault!") Otherwise, it's a sweet, unpretentious film about family bonds.
