It's a Scream
reviewed Fri, 05 Sept 1997
I
finally rented Scream -- figured I'd see what all the
hype
is about before the sequel comes out. It was fun, although the
hyper-hip,
ironically cool tone and the machine-gun paced pop-culture references
(note
to screenwriter: the Richard Gere gerbil story is sooooo five
minutes
ago) started to grate after an hour or so, and it doesn't bode well for
a 10th anniversary re-release (at least, I'm hoping that in ten
years, we'll have forgotten that Ricki Lake ever had a talk show)
(speaking
of ten-year rereleases, who exactly thought that the world needed to
revisit
Dirty Dancing on the big screen? What's next -- A
Night
in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, the Director's Cut?). But the
acting
was above par for a teen horror flick, and the writing is sharp and
funny.
The ending was pretty stupid, but I guess you have to expect that from
a horror movie. All in all, worth the $1.99.
