George "Yummy!" Clooney is just unbelievably sexy, charming, and gorgeous, and he's finally ditched that coy, "head down, eyes up" acting style. Lopez is a great match for him, as a tough-as-nails federal marshal who's a little startled to find out she has a soft side (hey, there's no shame in falling for Clooney!). They're terrific together; there's one scene in particular in a hotel bar, when Clooney approaches Lopez, and you see him at first reflected in a window with snow falling through him.... my heart about stopped. Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard.
Director Steven Soderbergh has a lot of nice scenes like that -- this is definitely his best film. Everything about this movie is gorgeous and sexy -- the actors, the dialogue, the lighting, the music. Despite its '90s gloss, it reminded me of those classic film noirs, like Double Indemnity or The Blue Dahlia. It's a little slow-paced, but that's part of its charm, drawing out the anticipation of Clooney and Lopez getting together.
The supporting cast makes even the scenes without Clooney worthwhile. Steve Zahn, the best thing about That Thing You Do! and subUrbia, is hilarious here as a stoner ex-con. Ving Rhames and Don Cheadle, as always, are great, and there are hysterical cameos from Michael Keaton (reprising his role from Jackie Brown) and Samuel L. Jackson.
I haven't seen a single bad review of this movie, and everyone I know who's seen it has loved it. So why would you be any different? Go see this movie. I'll be going again... and again... and again...
