LIVING OUT LOUD is kind of a mature chick flick. Holly Hunter has something of a nervous breakdown after her creep husband leaves her for a younger woman. She slowly rebuilds her life with the help of elevator operator Danny DeVito and torch singer Queen Latifah (who's terrific). It's a nice little movie, and anyone who's ever had to sit alone at a restaurant or been stood up on a date will feel sympathetic pangs.
GIA is sort of a mess, like the title character. The only reason to see this HBO movie (now on video) is Angelina Jolie in the lead role -- she's stunning. She's becoming one of my favorite new actresses. Here she plays Gia, who evidently was some kind of big shot model back in the 80s and was brought down by drugs. The film isn't much, but La Jolie is fab and well worth the price of rental.
I almost hesitate to even mention CEMETERY MAN, because it's a godawful movie, but it's definitely in the "so bad it's good" category. Directed by Michele Soave, which must be Italian for "Ed Wood," it stars Rupert Everett (thus answering the question of why I rented it), and it's just hysterically bad. The opening credits abruptly switch from English to Italian. You can see the wires moving the "ghosts" around. Heads get split open quite frequently, but they're clearly plaster molds -- and bad ones at that. Everett spends the entire movie with a slack-jawed, stunned look on his face, as though he were trying to reconstruct the thought process that led him to accept this role. Also, he's usually shirtless, and sometimes pantsless, but that will appeal to only a few of you.
A couple that would have been good if I'd been in a different mood, but as it was, I couldn't finish: DAS BOOT (how long were they going to be in that sub?!) and MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE.
