Get Real

Get Real is a funny, moving film about Stephen, a gay 16-year-old falling in love for the first time... with the star of his school's soccer team, who isn't willing to admit he's gay, even as he falls for Stephen. There's nothing particularly revolutionary about the movie -- it's just a sweet coming-of-age story with the added layer of coming out. I'm afraid I can't think of too much to say about it beyond that -- I'd certainly recommend it.

I have to say, though, movies like this always piss me off: gorgeous, big-man-on-campus, star-athlete hunk falls for scrawny outcast. Get real, indeed. That happens rarely enough in the grown-up world, and practically never in the ferociously stratified world of high school. (I wouldn't be so bitter about this if part of me didn't get suckered every time, just for a moment, into believing it.)

Maybe I should just go to my happy place now. Mmmmm... oh, yes, Rupert, I'd love another margarita... but after the massage, darling... mmmmmm.....
