1999 best of the year

reviewed Wed, 05 Jan 2000

Okay, here's my list of the best movies of the year, subject to revision as some of the year-end films make their way to this backwater town over the next few months.  Not really in any order.  This is gonna be short because it's half-time in the Duke game.

  The Talented Mr. Ripley
  Being John Malkovich
  Boys Don't Cry
  Fight Club
  Three Kings
  American Beauty
  Election
  The Winslow Boy
  An Ideal Husband
  The Limey
  Sleepy Hollow

(So it's more than 10.  Bite me.)

Others definitely worth seeing:  Limbo (just DEAL with the ending, people!), South Park, American Movie, Bowfinger, Trick, End of the Affair, My Name Is Joe

Best soundtrack: South Park   Best song ever: "Uncle F**ka"

Most amazing performances: Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry), Matt Damon (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Denzel Washington (The Hurricane), Russell Crowe (The Insider), Rupert Everett (Inspector Gadget) (okay, not really, I just wanted to see if you're paying attention)

Movies that will make you wish the movie camera had never been invented: Random Hearts, Forces of Nature, Dog Park, Mystery Alaska, Stir of Echoes, Music of the Heart, and the winner, The Other Sister.  (I only actually sat all the way through two of these.)

Okay, game's starting again.  Bye.  Go Duke!
