10 best of 1998

In the last few hours of 1998, here's my list of the year's best films. For once, they're actually in some sort of order of preference, more or less, though they're all pretty close. That's right, Saving Private Ryan is NOT on the list:

1. Men with Guns (best soundtrack of the year, too) (though Entertainment Weekly said it was one of the five WORST movies of the year, so go figure.)
2. Happiness
3. The Opposite of Sex
4. Out of Sight
5. The Big Lebowski
6. Life is Beautiful
7. Lawn Dogs
8. The Truman Show
9. A Simple Plan
10. Shakespeare in Love

Honorable mentions to The Spanish Prisoner and A Friend of the Deceased

Two excellent films I saw at the DC International Film Festival, which will probably never show in theaters here, but in case you come across them at a film festival or something: Un Heros Tres Discret (A Self-Made Hero), Downtime

Worst film of the year has to be Buffalo 66. One Tough Cop was pretty putrid, but it didn't inspire nearly the animosity in me that Vincent Gallo did.
